# Customer Interview Bias: Leading Questions and Other Mistakes

Customer interviews can produce detailed evidence or detailed reassurance. The difference depends on whom you interview, what you ask, how you react and whether contradictory findings survive the analysis.

## The short answer

Define assumptions and disconfirming evidence before interviews. Recruit relevant participants beyond friendly contacts, ask neutral questions about real events, avoid pitching, use consistent probes, preserve transcripts and analyse positive, negative and contradictory evidence together.

## How bias enters customer interviews

Bias can enter through participant selection, leading questions, interviewer reactions, participant recall, interpretation and reporting. An interview can be transcribed accurately and still be biased.

## Leading questions and neutral alternatives

Replace “Wouldn’t this save you time?” with “Where does time go in the current process?” Replace “Would you use this?” with “What did you do the last time this occurred?” Replace “Why haven’t you solved this?” with “What have you tried, and what happened?”

A neutral question permits an unexpected answer, asks one thing at a time, uses familiar language, asks for real examples and makes equal sense if the preferred hypothesis is wrong.

## Common mistakes

- Pitching the solution before understanding the present.
- Interviewing only friends, supporters or existing customers.
- Treating buyer and user evidence as interchangeable.
- Asking people to predict future adoption.
- Talking more than listening.
- Accepting vague answers without examples.
- Ignoring contradictions.
- Counting positive comments as proof.

## How to reduce bias

Write assumptions and disconfirming evidence first. Define participants explicitly. Use and pilot a semi-structured guide. Separate discovery from concept feedback. Control interviewer reactions. Probe recent events. Preserve transcripts. Analyse consistently across participants and report limitations.

## Why use an independent interviewer?

Participants may be more candid with someone who is not selling or defending the idea. Independence can make consistent comparison and reporting of negative evidence easier, but it remains one control within a sound sample, guide and analysis process.

## Independent customer evidence

The standard project includes target definition, approximately 30–40 suitable prospects for client approval, recruitment, 20 interviews, transcripts, evidence analysis, a written report, recommended changes and a BUILD, CHANGE or KILL recommendation.

Fixed price: €2,900 + VAT. Typical timeline: approximately 2–4 weeks. Larger and multi-segment projects can be scoped separately.
